Drawing
This is just a small image to show me completing my sketch of my front cover. I placed my picture and paper up against a window so i could draw around it to see the size i would need my image of the band to be in order to fit an A4 peice of paper.

These images are rough sketches of my magazine. When i had my images, i just put on to paper my main ideas to then put into fireworks when making my magazine. When i produce my magazine i will make changes to the design but it will follow something along the lines of this.

Which one?
Music Magazine names
When I had my questionnaire results and readership profile, I then needed to think of a name for my music magazine before I could draw a design template of the front cover. I came up with three different ones I could use:
-Anthem
-Shout
-Playlist
Anthem was already taken by someone in my class and shout didn’t appeal to my audience when I asked for their opinion. I have decided to go with ‘Playlist’ because the magazine isn’t about one type of music and just like a playlist you put together all the music you like and want, which is what my magazine aims to do, add in what my audience wants by using the music they like; RnB, Pop and Rock.
Readership Profile
My reader is a teenager who is a student but may also have a part time weekend job. They listen to music for about 3-4 hours a day and would purchase the magazine monthly. They are willing to pay around £2 for it and their favourite genres are RnB, Pop and occasionally Rock. They attend a few concerts a year and like collecting CD’s and posters of their preferred bands/artists. They tend to look for interviews, concert information, gossip and posters in a music magazine and prefer bold colours to interest them.
Questionnaire Results
When I handed out my questionnaire, I made sure they went to my target audience being teenagers of around my age both boys and girls. This way I would gather a fair and a variety of results, making them valid.
Most of them were students with a few being employed with small weekend jobs. The majority listened to music between 3-4 hours a day and some exceeding 5 or more hours. The average amount of money spent on music a week was £1-2 so I must consider this when pricing my music magazine.
A variety of answers were given for how often a music magazine was bought, so I would make it a monthly magazine so that one a month is easier to purchase for my audience then once a week.
Out of the list of genres I included the two most popular were RnB and Pop so these will be the main focus of genres and a sub genre that was next popular was rock.
Concerts ranged between 1 and 3 a year and popular merchandise was posters and CD’s so advertising and giveaways would include these things. Gossip, concert info, interviews and posters were most popular features that attracted my audience so inside the magazine with the advertising would be these elements.
Shots are important, especially for my front cover and double page article. Close up and in action brought the highest interest so when I take several shots I will be choosing either of these to draw in my reader.
Finally bright and bold colouring attracted my audience so colours such as reds, blues and purples would look good to stand out on a white background.

Evaluating my school magazine
When I was asked to make a magazine cover and contents page for school I chose to look at sixth form because I believed it would be easy for me being a sixth former myself. It took a lot of planning but I managed to get a picture for my story in a free lesson.
Now that I have made my front cover I am pleased with it because I focused on the rule of three with colours; keeping it simple and easy for the reader to clearly see the important parts of the story. The image fits with my main story and I have kept it plain with little colour and not over crowded it with information, as this would bore my target audience and less sales would be made. I think one of the best things is the imagery on the contents page, i have included pictures that relate to my stories inside so without having to read the text you know what to expect which may appeal more to my reader than having to scan through lots of text.
The contents I think I could have improved on because I was told that I didn’t need to make the text have a glowing effect as it wasn’t as clear to the reader, so when I make my music magazine I will make sure I don’t use an effect on the text. Also on the front page i would have liked the image to be a bit brighter. The light from the window was behind the two girls so the effect wasn’t as good. Therefore I will address this in my music magazine by editing the picture before I put it in place.
I think I have focused on the target audience which was sixth formers at the school, as I have used peers for my picture and main story which would draw their attention more than if it was a younger year or older adult. However teachers and people related to the school may also be interested as i have included stories from teachers such as ‘Fishleighs thinking corner’ and ‘when Pixie Lott came to the school’.
A major part of my learning from this preliminary task is the use of Macromedia Fireworks. I wasn’t confident about the use of fireworks as I have never used it properly before this, although I had used it in GCSE for my ICT website. I have learnt how to crop the image, change the background and add in different fonts and effects which will really benefit me when creating my music magazine. Not only the use of fireworks but i have become more confident with my photography skills and how to use different parts of an image for greater effect. Lastly when I was analysing magazine covers and looking at one in detail I came across words I didn’t know before; different parts of the magazine to look at like the ‘masthead’ or ‘puff’.
